Few There Be That Find It

This morning’s thought came a little differently. Instead of a story or a lesson, the words started coming more like a prayer—maybe even a poem. My mind was on the words of Jesus about the broad way and the narrow way.

Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Matthew 7:14, KJV

So I sat for a while and let the thought develop.

The Narrow Way
The narrow way is seldom found,
While broad the road and wide;
So many walk its easy path,
With burning wants in sight.
The wide way offers many friends,
And beautiful things to see;
Yet nothing found along that road
Can last eternally.
Forgive us, Lord, our wicked ways,
When from Your path we stray;
Turn our eyes from worldly things,
And lead us in Your way.
For what are treasures we can hold,
If someday they must fall?
What good is gaining all the world,
If in the end we lose it all?
The narrow way may offer less
Of what this world calls gain;
But grace and peace and love are there,
And life beyond our pain.
And few there be that find the way,
Just as our Saviour said;
While many choose the broader road
And where their own hearts lead.
Oh, how I pray another soul
Will hear before too late;
And turn unto the Lord Jesus Christ,
And enter through the gate.
Jesus, my Friend, my faithful Lord,
Who sticketh closer than a brother;
My Saviour and my only hope—
There truly is no other.
So guide my feet along Your way,
Whatever it may cost;
And use my life to point toward You,
That others may not be lost.
The narrow road may have but few,
Yet gladly there I’ll stay;
For at its end awaits my Lord—
And He’s worth the narrow way.

As I finished writing that this morning, that last thought stayed with me.
He’s worth the narrow way.

The world can make the broad road look awfully inviting. Jesus never told us otherwise. But everything this world offers eventually gets left behind. What Christ offers is eternal.
So maybe the question beneath today’s tin roof is simply this:
Which road am I actually walking?

Until the rain falls again…
