Good Monday afternoon.
I found myself sitting on the porch this morning, waiting for a man to come by and give me a quote for some gravel.
As I watched and waited, my mind began to wander.
The gravel wasn’t the foundation, but it was part of preparing the ground.
It reminded me that before anything lasting can be built, the foundation has to be right.
That simple thought led me to Jesus’ words in Matthew 7.
“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock.” (Matthew 7:24, KJV)
Jesus wasn’t talking about houses.
He was talking about lives.
Every one of us is building something.
A marriage.
A family.
A career.
A ministry.
A testimony.
The question isn’t whether we’re building.
The question is what are we building on?
Sand may seem easier. It’s quicker. It doesn’t require much effort. But when the storms come—and they always do—a weak foundation is exposed.
A house built on the rock can withstand the wind and the rain because its foundation doesn’t move.
The same is true for our spiritual lives.
If my confidence is built on my feelings, they’ll change.
If it’s built on my circumstances, they’ll eventually disappoint me.
If it’s built on other people, they’ll let me down.
But if my life is built on Christ and His Word, then even when life shakes, my foundation remains secure.
As I sat on the porch this morning waiting for a load of gravel, I couldn’t help but ask myself a question.
Is my foundation still resting on the Rock?
Maybe that’s a good question for all of us today.
Not because we doubt who Jesus is…
But because every now and then, it’s healthy to stop and examine what we’re trusting in.
Everything else can shift.
The Rock never will.
Until the rain falls again…
Grace and peace,
A Porch Believer
